Based on the old school Roller Derby of late-night TV -- but updated for the 21st century with a DIY attitude, punk rock ethos, and live music -- Flat Track Derby has started a roller skating revolution across the country.
Since 2003, Flat Track Derby has gone from one league -- the Texas Rollergirls -- to more than 100 across the United States. San Francisco, Chicago, Boston, Detroit, New York, Philadelphia, Seattle, and many other cities all have leagues of their own -- and they've formed the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) to regulate their sport.
In February 2006, 20 competing leagues descended en masse on Tucson, Arizona, for the first-ever Flat Track Derby Tournament: the Dust Devil National Championship. The Texas Rollergirls triumphed to become the first National Flat Track champions.
What's the appeal of a Flat Track Derby bout? Strong women on wheels, bands, beer... taken individually, the components are pretty compelling. But together, they create an extravaganza.
Flat Track Derby. F*ck, yeah.
